St Swithun’s Embroidered Kneelers.

The kneelers are a memorial to the Revd Dr William Keble Martin, the famous botanist, who chose to spend his last days in Woodbury, and died, much loved and respected, in 1969. He is buried in the churchyard.

The designs depict wild flowers from his “Concise British Flora in Colour”, and there is a special edition of this book in a showcase in the Church.

Worked in Appleton’s wools on 16-to-the-inch canvas, the kneelers (of which there are now 128) show the flowers in finer detail than would be possible on a coarser canvas. Most of the stitching is needlepoint petit point (tent stitch), and there are over 52,800 stitches in each one. Five of them were exhibitied in 1994 at the Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace London, and in Harrogate.

The kneelers have been made from designs by local artists, and embroidered by many devoted parishioners over the thirty years.
